We have added a few traditions over the past few years of our Advent celebration in our house.
2 years ago we started the tradition of reading a story in the Jesus Storybook Bible and hanging an ornament on the tree each night. The girls really loved this part this year. We had to switch out nights of who got to open the ornament and who got to hang the ornament. Lil Bit was still a bit too young for this one. Her attention span was too short, but she sure did love getting to the end and kept saying "Ornament, Ornament" when the story was over.
A tradition that was continued this year was reading a story from a book that Jo-Jo gave me before Monkey was even born. It is very special to me. You follow a sweet little bear on a journey to see the Baby in the manger. They are short and sweet stories and were perfect for bedtime.
2 new traditions we added this year were a lot of fun! I went to the library and checked out 25 Christmas books and wrapped each one and put them under the tree. Monkey got to choose a new book and open a "present" each day and we got to read a new story together! She LOVED this and we will continue this for years to come.
The second one was another Advent story. I got the idea from Noel Piper and then got the patterns for the actual calendar from HeartFelt Truths. I followed the story of Noel's that you can get here. The neat part about this story is that you start with Day 1 and only read that day. Then each day, you start over at Day 1 and read up until the day you are one. It is pretty neat because you start with the empty manger and each day you add something new to the calendar until you finish it with adding Baby Jesus.
I love all these traditions. They help prepare our hearts for the celebration of Jesus' birth. They will only grow richer as our girls get older and gain a deeper understanding of what this season is about. I love that they are each short and sweet and they are fun things that the girls can participate in!
